What kind of instrument is Densoon?

Densoon is a double-reed woodwind instrument, just like its classical predecessor: the bassoon.
It is an acoustic instrument powered by the M.A.W.I.P. platform, which provides an assisted simplified fingering system while preserving the authentic sound and playing characteristics of a traditional acoustic bassoon.

It can also be purchased with the optional MIDI mouthpiece, expanding its creative and expressive possibilities.

How do you play it?

Densoon is a bassoon in every respect, so learning to control your breath and developing the appropriate embouchure are key to playing it.
You can choose between a traditional double reed or a sax-style single-reed mouthpiece.

Does Densoon have the same limited range as a recorder?

No. Densoon is a true bassoon, including its full range of three and a half octaves.

Who can play it?

Thanks to its simplified fingering system, anyone can start playing Densoon in a short time—from students and enthusiasts to multi-instrumentalists and musicians discovering the bassoon for the first time.

Where can i buy Densoon?

Buy Densoon directly from MAWIP or from one of our retailers: you’ll find all the information on our Contact page.

How much does Densoon weigh?

Densoon weighs 3.7 kg, approximately the same as a traditional bassoon.
This is because the mechatronic system replacing the traditional metal keywork has an overall weight comparable to the original mechanism.

Does clarisoon require power?

Yes. As an electronically assisted instrument, Densoon requires a power supply.
You can operate it either using the included AC power adapter or an external battery pack for greater freedom of movement.

What should i do when i've finished playing?

Once you've finished playing, we recommend disconnecting the instrument from its power supply. This helps preserve battery life and protects the system from unnecessary power fluctuations.

Do I need to purchase a reed separately?

No. A double reed is included with the instrument.

What type of reed should i use?

Although traditional cane reeds can be used, we recommend synthetic reeds, which are better suited to Densoon's design and playing experience.

How often should i replace the reed?

It depends on how often and how long you play.
Natural cane reeds typically last a few weeks, while synthetic reeds can last several months.

How do I clean Densoon?

Densoon is cleaned in exactly the same way as a traditional bassoon.
Follow this tutorial to learn how to assemble, disassemble, and clean the instrument.
We recommend cleaning the instrument after every playing session.
Everything you need for routine cleaning is included in the kit.
